How to Target a Niche Market
Figuring out how to target a niche market is an essential step before building out a website. First you need to understand the audience and what buyers are looking for.
Understand Your Buyer Type
You need to think about the market you are targeting and if theĀ niche is a “Want” or a “need” for buyers.
“Want” Buyers
Buyers who “Want It” are not as desperate as buyers who “need it” so “want” niches are more along the lines of products and items that would be nice to have but they don’t have to have. You can target this audience with coupons or specials to get a buyer to act now rather than put off the purchase.
People who are more passionate about a niche are the best so look at the “passion” in your niche as these people are dedicated and motivated to own the latest and greatest products. (Repeat Buyers)
“Need” Buyers
Buyers in a niche that “Need” a product or solution are obviously very motivated and want a fix or solution to their problem. This is common in popular markets like weight loss, financial/make money, health problems, dating/relationships.
These are all huge markets and the reason there is a lot of competition in these “need” markets is because these buyers are ready to buy and they won’t put off making a decision. If you can provide quality content and a solition to their problem then they will buy.
How to Target A Niche Market
There are many ways to target a niche but generally the common ways are to either:
1. Target a niche from the top down by first studying the market to know the wants/needs of the customer, keywords to use, and then find products to market to those needs.
For targeting the overall niche approach you can startĀ with a broad understanding of the market and then find a sub-segment of that market that you feel you can target for better conversions
2. Bottom up approach by starting with a specific product and then figuring out how and where where to target that product.
For product targeting you can study where that product is already being advertised in the internet and study the ads and methods running. You can then look up the demographics of the sites you see targeting that product and also look at the ad copy, images, call to action.
It is good to have an idea of demographics of the customer audience for that product then you can style your ads or content for your site around that audience.(Example, If you targeted a product that appeals to younger audience then you might have more videos, images of younger people, and article content that address the wants and needs of an audience that age.)
Once you have an idea with how you are going to target your site and have an understanding of your audience then you need to start looking through keywords to find buyer keywords that you can rank for.
Targeting low competition rankings for niche keywords is usually the more popular method but some choose to target the higher competition keywords for a niche with the goal of building a larger scale site which the understanding that it will take longer to beat out aged, higher ranked sites in google.
Overall doing the initial steps of understanding your niche market and targeting an audience properly will provide you with a more successful site than if you just did a broad targeted site with no strategy for converting traffic to sales
